Some local councils accept small electricals as part of their home recycling scheme. If yours does there may be special instructions on how to put them out for collection. It is best to check with them first.

Which electrical items can be recycled?

Small electrical items that can be recycled include:

  • Any items that have a plug, use batteries, need charging or have a picture on them of a crossed-out wheelie bin;

  • Garden tools such as lawnmowers and shredders;

  • Personal grooming products like hair dryers, straighteners, electric toothbrushes and shavers;

  • Small kitchen appliances such as kettles, toasters and blenders;

  • Technology such as radios, CD/DVD players, electronic toys & games, phones, MP3 players, TVs, printers and cameras;

  • Other items such as lamps, torches, Christmas tree lights, vacuum cleaners, smoke detectors and dispensers, IT and communications equipment, laptops, computers, power tools, sports equipment, medical devices and control instruments.

Large electrical items that should be collected separately as part of your bulky waste collection arranged with your local council if you have this service include:

  • Flat screen TVs and monitors;

  • Fluorescent lamps;

  • Fridges, freezers, washing machines and other white goods;

  • CRT TV device that uses cathode ray tubes.

Any items that have a plug, use batteries, need charging or have a picture on them of a crossed-out wheelie bin, are known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
